Saigon, July 29, 2012
PRESS RELEASE No. 02/2012
Demand the Vietnamese government to stop illegal detention and immediately release the Catholics and Protestants youths.

Since July 30, 2011, after a series of unlawful arrests of many participants, collaborators and correspondents of the Vietnamese Redemptorist News network (VRNs) in Saigon, another wave of subsequent violent round ups followed disregarding of the law, stretching from Saigon to Vinh diocese to Hanoi

To date, there have been 17 Catholic Youth arrested, mostly from the diocese of Vinh, which has been known for its undaunting struggle against injustice and is now in the spot light for arrests and assaults on priests and parishioners, and for a series of desecration in Con Cuong missionary post.

Ten of the arrested namely Peter Nguyen Xuan Anh, Nong Hung Anh, Peter Nguyen Dinh Cuong, Francis Dang Xuan Dieu, John Thai Van Dung, John the Baptist Nguyen Van Duyet, Peter Ho Duc Hoa, Paul Tran Minh Nhat, John the Baptist Nguyen Van Oai,Paul Ho Van Oanh have been detained at Camp B14 in Hanoi

Four other youths, Anthony Dau Van Duong, Peter Tran Huu Duc, Anthony Chu Manh Son, and John the Baptist Hoang Phong were put on trial in the Vinh City, Nghe An province. They were given heavy sentences to which three of them strongly protested and have been in the process of making appeals.

Two others, Maria Ta Phong Tan and Peter Tran Vu Anh Binh are temporarily being held in Saigon; According to latest information known to the VNRs, Paulus Le Van Son has been sequestered and transferred to Hoa Lo prison – Hanoi.

One year has passed since the date they were wrongfully arrested, the authorities have not been given any probable cause for the arrest of these Catholic Youths. On the other hand, after being kidnapped, they were neither given access to legal counsel nor religious support. Paulus Le Son’s mother became gravely ill and passed away while her son was incarcerated.

Therefore, in retrospect of one year, We, the Vietnamese Redemptorist News network, and those who love justice and truth find the followings:

1. The Catholic Youths detainees are all righteous people. They simply concerned for the fate of our country, attended the courses on communications and were blogging to bring justice and truth to everyone; They were serving the public through social activities and charitable work in order to bring the love of God to mankind.

2. The Catholic Youths were not arrested in accordance with due process under Vietnam law as well as international conventions to which Vietnam had signed or acceded to; their ongoing detention in silence indicates a serious violation, against the spirit of the call to construct a state of jurisdiction.

3. We demand the authorities to immediately stop unlawful detention and release these youths. The Criminal Code stipulates that no one is found guilty when there is no valid judgment from the court of law. Therefore, if these Catholic youths deemed guilty then they should be brought before an independent, public court in accordance to Article 16, Article 18 of the Criminal Code and Article 9, Article 10 of the current International Declaration on Human Rights.

4. Professor Allen Weiner, faculty member of Stanford University of Law, one of the leading universities in the United States has filed a petition on behalf of these 17 young peoples to the United Nations’ Working Group on arbitrary detention.

5. We call on all organizations and community of those who love justice and truth in Vietnam and around the world to hold prayer vigils, and ask them to demand the Vietnamese authorities to release these 17 youths. We cannot maintain an unlawful government.

Sincerely yours,

O/B of the Vietnamese Redemptorist News Network
Fr. Anthony Le Ngoc Thanh, C.Ss.R.

Chief of the Secretariat
Fr. Joseph Dinh Huu Thoai, C.Ss.R.
