Vietnamese Religious Freedom Advocate Wins Writer’s Award

Senior Correspondent for ASSIST News Service SURREY, ENGLAND (ANS) – Vietnamese Catholic blogger and religious freedom advocate Nguyen Huu Vinh has been awarded the Hellman/Hammett award for writers facing political persecution.

According to a news release from Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Nguyen Huu Vinh (also known as Jean Baptiste Nguyen Huu Vinh) was among 41 people selected for the Hellman/Hammett award administered by the human rights NGO Human Rights Watch.

CSW said Nguyen Huu Vinh has written poems, blog posts and reports on a broad range of sensitive issues. They include land confiscation and disputes, police brutality, and restrictions on the right to freedom of religion.

CSW said he has also been vocal on controversial topics such as Hanoi-Vatican relations, official corruption, and Hanoi’s response to the South China Sea dispute with Beijing.

As a result, CSW said, Nguyen Huu Vinh has been questioned by police numerous times and is under close surveillance. He has also been assaulted twice. Most recently in July 2012, he was attacked by knife-wielding thugs after taking part in, and blogging about, an anti-China rally in Hanoi.

In September, CSW expressed concern over the sentencing of three Catholic bloggers whose heavy sentences highlight a broader pattern of restriction on freedom of expression in Vietnam.

CSW said Human Rights Watch has criticized the Government of Vietnam for suppressing freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, and for persecuting those who question or criticize the government.

Andrew Johnston, Advocacy Director at CSW said in a news release, “We congratulate Mr Nguyen Huu Vinh on receiving this prestigious award for his dedicated writing on human rights and freedom of religion in Vietnam.”

He added, “As the government continues to restrict freedom of expression and freedom of religion or belief, writers like Nguyen Huu Vinh play a crucial role in monitoring and spreading information about the actions of those in authority. CSW calls on the Government of Vietnam to cease harassment of human rights activists in Vietnam and to release all religious and political prisoners of conscience.”

Surrey, Anh Quốc (ANS) – Ông Nguyễn Hữu Vinh, một blogger người Thiên chúa giáo Việt Nam đồng thời là nhà hoạt động ủng hộ tự do tôn giáo vừa được trao giải thưởng Hellman/Hammett dành cho những nhà văn đang phải đương đầu với ngược đãi chính trị.

Theo bản tin của tổ chức Đoàn Kết Thiên Chúa Giáo Toàn Cầu (Christian Solidarity Worldwide – CSW), ông Nguyễn Hữu Vinh (còn được biết với tên gọi Jean Baptiste Nguyễn Hữu Vinh) là một trong 41 người đã được chọn trao giải thưởng Hellman/Hammett do tổ chức nhân quyền phi chính chủ Human Rights Watch điều hành.

CSW cho hay ông Nguyễn Hữu Vinh làm thơ, viết tường trình đăng trên blog đề cập đến rất nhiều đề tài nhạy cảm như các vụ tranh chấp và tịch thu đất đai, hành xử tàn ác của công an, và hạn chế quyền tự do tôn giáo.

CSW cho hay ông Vinh còn mạnh mẽ bày tỏ chính kiến với những đề tài gây tranh cãi như quan hệ giữa Vatican và Hà Nội, nạn quan chức tham nhũng, phản ứng của Hà Nội trong tranh chấp chủ quyền Biển Đông với Bắc Kinh.

Kết quả là, cũng theo SCW, ông Nguyễn Hữu Vinh đã bị công an thẩm vấn rất nhiều lần và luôn bị giám sát rất chặt chẽ. Ông Vinh cũng đã bị tấn công hai lần. Mới đây hồi tháng 7, 2012, ông Vinh đã bị một nhóm côn đồ dùng dao tấn công sau khi ông đã tham gia, và viết đăng trên blog về cuộc biểu tình chống Trung Quốc tại Hà Nội.

Tháng 9, CSW đã bày tỏ quan ngại đối với việc nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam kết án ba blogger Thiên chúa giáo với những bản án rất nặng mà đã bộc lộ rõ một mô thức sâu rộng hơn dùng để hạn chế quyền tự do bày tỏ chính kiến tại Việt Nam.

CSW cho hay Human Rights Watch đã phê phán chính quyền Việt Nam trong việc đàn áp các quyền tự do bày tỏ chính kiến, lập hội, và hội họp ôn hòa, cũng như bắt giam những người chất vấn và phê phán chính quyền.

Ông Andrew Johnson, Giám đốc Pháp lý tại CSW nói trong một buổi công bố bản tin, “Chúng tôi chúc mừng ông Nguyễn Hữu Vinh đã được nhận giải thưởng danh giá này do ông đã tận tụy viết lên tiếng đòi hỏi cho nhân quyền và quyền tự dọ tín ngưỡng tại Việt Nam”.

Ông Andrew còn nói thêm, “Trong khi chính quyền Việt Nam không ngừng hạn chế quyền tự do bày tỏ chính kiến, tự do tôn giáo hay tín ngưỡng, những nhà văn như ông Nguyễn Hữu Vinh đóng một vai trò trọng yếu trong việc theo dõi và phổ biến thông tin về những hành xử của những kẻ nắm quyền lực. CSW kêu gọi chính quyền Việt Nam hãy ngưng sách nhiễu những nhà hoạt động nhân quyền tại Việt Nam, và hãy phóng thích tất cả những tù nhân lương tâm chính trị và tôn giáo.”

Tổ chức Đoàn Kết Thiên Chúa Giáo Toàn Cầu hoạt động cho tự do tôn giáo qua đấu tranh pháp lý và nhân quyền nhằm đạt được mục đích công lý.
