Ambassador to Vietnam
Earlier
today the EU Ambassador to Vietnam, Franz Jessen, expressed his concerns over
the
sentencing
of 14 bloggers and journalists (activists) in Nghe An province on 9 January to
prison
terms ranging form 3 to13 years, for acts related to the exercise of freedom of
expression.
Ambassador
Jessen recalled the fundamental right for all persons to hold and freely
express
their
opinions in a peaceaful manner, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of
Human
Rights
and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to
which
Vietnam
is a party.
He
added that this sentencing appears to be inconsistent with Vietnam's respective
international
obligations, and continues to the overall negative trend with sentencing of
bloggers
and Human Rights Defenders, as shown by the confirmation on appeal of the harsh
sentencing
for bloggers Dieu Cay, Anh Ba Sai Gon and Ta Phong Tan, on 28 December 2012
in
Ho Chi Minh city.
The
sentences in these two trials appear to be particularly severe.
The
Vietnamese authorities should review the sentences immediately.

Nam
Ngày hôm nay (11/01/2013), đại sứ Liên Âu (EU) tại Viet Nam Franz Jessen đã bày tỏ sự quan ngại về việc kết án 14 blogger và nhà báo (nhà
hoạt động) tại tỉnh Nghe An ngày 9 tháng 1 từ 3 đến 13 năm tù vì những hành động liên quan nen viec thực hiện tự do ngôn luận.
Đại sứ Jessen đã nhắc lại quyền cơ bản của tất cả mọi người là được quyền có ý kiến và bày tỏ ý
kiến một cách hòa bình theo Tuyên bố Toàn cầu về Nhân quyền và điều 19 của Công ước Quốc tế về Quyền Dân sự và Chính trị mà Việt Nam là một thành viên.
Ông thêm rằng việc kết án này cho thấy sự không nhất quán với những trách nhiệm tương ứng của Việt Nam và tiếp tục xu hướng tiêu cực chung của việc kết án những blogger và
những Người Bảo vệ Nhân quyền, thể hiện bằng việc giữ nguyên bản án nặng tại phiên tòa phúc thẩm đối với các blogger Điếu Cày, Anh Ba Sài Gòn và Tạ Phong Tần vào ngày 28 tháng 12 năm 2012 tại thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
Những bản án tại hai phiên tòa này là đặc biệt nặng.
Chính quyền Việt Nam nên xem xét lại những bản án này ngay lập tức.
